This book is not the catalogue of an exhibition, nor is it an edited volume of academic texts devoted to addressing issues of resource extraction and global warming from the perspective of the contemporary visual arts.
This book is a tool. It is a proposal of sorts. An invitation to become allies, to raise questions on the complexities and opportunities of an extremely peculiar world, to share possible responses based on this earthly site-specificity. It contains the intention of extending an inquisitive process, whose first steps we have explored with an open mind, humility and curiosity, to continue on new and not yet expected paths, possibly with different and unexpected partners.
This is a call to continue learning from each other, one that stems from the soil, the weather, plants, non-human beings and from the will of those humans with whom this curiosity resonates. This is where we are sharing our initial thoughts and experiences, various strands of knowledge, the images that emerged after many months of asking questions and listening to many stories, together. Now, finally, we are revealing the net- work of people who contributed to the dialogues and who added to the learning experi- ences. Ex Situ means exactly this: embracing what arises from a locality, listening to it, learning from it, understanding its value and sharing it.
